Poems on Cloth - YOU CAN PET MY DOG - Healing Apparel T-shirt

A few weeks ago I went to a Farmer's Market (Art on the Side) event in Liberty, Missouri, and had a wonderful time interacting with the vendors and guests there. The experience inspired a poem I wrote called "Farmer's Market" detailing the personal interactions I had (or in this case, did not have) with everyone there. This shirt is a direct reference to a stern-looking man I saw walking an extremely friendly-looking dog, with a sign that read "DO NOT PET" hung around the dog's neck. It reminded me of how much our personal experiences and lens to the world colors how we interact with our surroundings, be it from a place of fear or love. Neurologically, when we go to bed at night & are pre-emptively grateful for the positive experiences of the day ahead, studies have shown we do in fact go on to have and experience better tomorrows.

This man I saw, for whatever personal reasons of his (and I am not judging, merely observing), felt the need to warn others about keeping their distance from his animal. Of course, there could be perfectly reasonable & good intentions for this. I wondered how much of this fear of his dog biting people was from his own perception. Perhaps there had been a past incident of violence. Perhaps the dog was a service animal in training. I have no idea. I wondered how the situation would have been different if the sign read the opposite. I will probably never know the exact answer for this specific person and dog, but it inspired me to create this shirt for all dog owners not afraid to let strangers pet their loving animals.
